This is probably the best value you can currently get for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 printers if you decide to stay with the officially approved cartridge. Its 2200-page rating is more than double that of the HP 940 Officejet Black Ink Cartridge (C4902AN) but it costs only 1/3 more. Definitely preferred even for a casual user because, unless you use your printer as a fashion statement or status symbol in the office, you ARE going to have to replace a 1000-page cartridge, sooner or later.
The 2,200 page rating is based on HP's testing methodology meaning that it's highly unlikely that you will get 2,200 pages out of your cartridge. If you make copies, if you print photos, if you use the high quality settings you are going to run out of ink much sooner but the fact remains that you do get a lot more ink in this cartridge than in the 'regular' one.
HP claims (couldn't verify) that using Officejet inks on papers with the ColorLok logo the output will retain color quality 'for decades'. Such an ink/paper combination, according to HP, will produce documents that resist water and fading.

The HP 940XL Ink Cartridge provides a lot of pages for the money in my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer. We use our printer every day, having two teens in school and both my wife and I doing work from home, so we can use up a standard size cartridge fairly quickly. Since we don't like to use 3rd party inks, these high volume cartridges are the best value for us.

I purchased the HP OfficeJet 8500 because of the volume yields for printing (especially the black). I am running a tax and accounting business and I obviously blow through black ink on a regular basis. This helps me keep costs down and the ability to print with an inkjet allows me to provide colorful financial statements, reports, etc for my clients. If you need a little more than laser black and white printing, but cannot afford a color laser, I would recommend this product along with purchasing the HP 8500. Love this printer because of the XL cartridges and the ability scan my workpapers easily. This printer also allows you to define the buttons on the front of the unit to perform specific tasks... scan to client files directory, scan to email, etc. Very handy and I have been advising my monthly customers to get one of these for their small business needs.

What can I say, It's an Ink cartridge.
First one that came with printer lasted about 700 pages mostly draft mode.
This one is rated to last a lot longer, so far so good.
