3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile For Calories Out Approximation   December 27, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

I measure calories in and calories out daily.

After more use, I tried to raise this to 4 stars from the original 3 but was unable to change.

I use a Polar Sx625 (an excellent device) heart rate monitor to approximate my exercise calories and have my basic metabolism approximated regularly using a BIA, and a DEXA.

I have been using the gowear fit device for a little over a week and am generally impressed. It responds to my physical activities (martial arts, weight lifting, hiking, spinning, et al) in a reasonable way. I have found the hour by hour activity burn but am not sure how to correlate the calorie burn to my activities themselves (how many calories did I burn weight lifting, for example.)

I did calibrate it (by inputting a weight other than my actual that generates the basic calorie burn BMR I know to be true)

I am a bit nervous about reliability since the case doesn't seem too water resistant and I can envision the USB port getting wet with sweat.

I think this device is interesting and likely worth having. I will update as I get more feedback.

I tried (and hated) the actitrainer when it first came out as unreliable and generally not useful. I actually bought a $20 pedometer and got the useful part of actitrainer from that. I think I read that actitrainer has modified their software to use the heart rate data (they didn't when I had it) but still I don't want to wear a heart rate monitor all day.

The gowear fit approach seems much simpler.

Update... While I get different results from the Polar s625x (which have proven correct over a couple years) during exercise and the gowear fit.. .at the end of the day the two approaches are pretty close at approxamating calories out. For example during a recent weightlifting session the gowear fit showed about half the calorie burn as the polar, and the gowear was including my BMR (basic metabolism) while the polar was not. But at the end of the day they were within closer than 10% of each other. With the Polar I add the BMR to the exercise calories. With Gowear the total is provided.

The calories eaten (in) approximation on gowear is very limited, to the point of not being useful. Gowear assumes that one eats about the same calories each day. In my case as well as many others I know calories in (eaten) vary drastically depending on the exercise that day. I woudl be happier not having to factor that out of the reports (which are very good by the way) I use myPersonalDiet (www.vidaone.com) to track calories eaten so I dont need this from gowear anyhow.

5 out of 5 stars GoWear Fit Lifestyle and Calorie Management System   December 24, 2008

The bulkiest thing about this product is its name. So I'll just call it the GoWear Fit Body Monitor.

Just as the other reviewers have commented, it's small and comfortable. I've only had it for two days, but it's made a great first impression. It was fully charged within three hours and in the meantime I registered it at the site and browsed.

I also committed to a year subscription to the online Activity Manager. A must- especially if you don't have the display device. But Amazon has a great deal going on with the BodyWear people, and if you buy here you get three free months.

After it charged, I put it on my arm and it powered up within a minute although the instructions said it could take up to ten minutes.

I'm very happy with this product. I can see it will keep me motivated and it's just really cool to see the graphs of the day's activities- from playing fiddle, to working out at the gym, to walking, to sleeping. It keeps your daily target memorized and counts calories burned, steps taken and minutes of moderate to vigorous activity. Too cool- a friend of mine has gadget envy.

I recommend supplementing this purchase with the display device. It's really great to have instant feedback without having to constantly log into the Activity Manager. As long as I use IE to use it... there does seem to be a java issue if I use Firefox but I don't mind using Explorer just for this.

5 out of 5 stars Better than advertised!!!!   December 18, 2008

This is going to be a lengthy review, so if you are looking for the Reader's Digest version, here it is: If you are in any way contemplating this purchase, stop reading and buy it.

Now, on to the review...

I have owned this device for a week. I am a 37 year old male with approximately 25 lbs to lose. I have a sedentary job and joined a gym 6 weeks ago. I have had a back injury for 7 months and am slowly geting back into the groove.

When I first received it, the unit was not charged, so I had to be patient and wait the 3 hrs it takes to fully charge it. As others have stated, it is not at all cumbersome or uncomfortable. In fact, I often forget that I am wearing it. After it was charged, I had difficulty getting my computer to recognize it. I later learned, through the assistance of Customer Service, that the problem was due to a Java update. They assisted me in getting past this, and that has been the only hiccup so far.

The device is, quite simply, amazing. For starters, anyone doubting the sleep tracker will be in for a huge surprise. It is incredibly accurate. I conciously paid attention to when I went to bed and looked up at the clock a few moments before I fell asleep. In the morning when I uploaded the numbers, it showed me the same exact times and results.

As far as nutrition tracking and calorie consumption, it would have been nice for everything to be included, but, as another reviewer stated, it is easy enough to track your nutrition using a free program like the one at sparkpeople (search for that word if you don't know what it is). Even without using an outside program, the gowear does have nutrition assessment or it can estimate your caloric intake based upon the statistics you provide when you first set up the armband.

In addition, the gowear fit Activity Manager displays your calorie balance, duration of activity (including the intensity of it), and steps. I also just discovered that it exports your data to a Microsoft Excel page that you can store on your computer and use to track your long-term success.

This device is an incredible motivator. During the first few days that I had it on, I did not go to the gym because I wanted to get a baseline of my normal activities. When I finally started to go to the gym, I was thrilled by my Calories Burned...until I recorded my food for the day and saw that I was simply breaking even. With such instant feedback, I altered my eating habits, and in the last 3 days I lost 3 lbs. I know that water is the first to go when one begins a diet, but I also saw the 2,000 calorie deficit that I had yesterday alone, and I know that after the water is gone, I will continue to lose.

I cannot recommend this product highly enough. If you are competetive and have no challengers to motivate you, let me introduce you to the GoWear Fit. When you see those numbers, you will have all the competition you need.

5 out of 5 stars Six stars!   December 6, 2008

Wow! This device is first rate all the way, I am pleased to find something that lives up to all the hype. I have only had this a few days, and I have not tested the support staff, how unusual is that!

My PC with Vista found the device, located the drivers, installed the software and I connected to the website. No problems.

The setup for my specifics was easy, I can see a lot of time and strength went into the development of this software. Being part of software development in my line of work, I can tell how solid it is right off.

Sure there is room for additions, but don't we expect that to just happen in this day and age? It's nice to see a solid product with room for improvement, rather than a product being beta tested by the public and a crud design. No complaints here.

To the expert reviewer that says a heart monitor is required, you might want to double check those facts. To anyone that thinks food tracking is missing, I have a suggestion. Track your food for three days using the software it is sooooo easy, and then keep going....... Do threeeeee more days.......you can do it!

If you are OK or better with a PC, you will love this. If not, I think it's simple enough that just about anyone can learn. If you love data and information (which is awareness and power here), you will look forward to the next day, so you can see how you did! How great is that, constant personal self awareness at your fingertips.

I am great at doing mindless eating, and that's part of why I am fat, but I would have to be brain dead to be able to tune out this reminder on my arm! And it doesn't nag or scream at me like my wife, "get out of that fridge, you don't' need those!" It just sits there and quietly watches me, a silent reminder like a good friend.

Want to know how many calories you burn doing that nightly walk? Want to know how many more you need to burn to meet your goal to lose weight that day? Want to make up for that cake? This is it!

Last night I asked my wife, come on honey, let's see how many calories we can burn doing that new exercise DVD! My oh my, I was pleasantly surprised! This thing even knows a basic burn rate when I have it off!

So many features here, I am not going to go through them, but let me add that the food tracking feature is easy, powerful and I can configure it, just for me!

Oh, if you are so poor that you can't pay the monitoring fee, then don't buy it, it's needed. But if you are that poor, what are you shopping on Amazon for, you better get a second job or a paper route! The food I am saving by not eating so much will pay for the device and the monitoring within 3 months easy!

I love this thing, I am getting one for my wife so we can burn calories together more often. I actually got mine from the manufacturer, but Amazon has 3 month monitoring thrown in and free shipping for me, so my wifes gift comes from them.

Oh, least I forget. Besides all the weight I am losing, I have a sleep disorder. I know my sleep chart because of past studies, and my GoWear fit does a great job of matching my pattern perfectly.

It's not a sleep assessment by any means, but I see when I lay down, I see when I drop off, I see the long block where I am in stage one and two. I also see my delayed rem sleep when my breathing stops, the cpap I use hits full speed and I hit dream land because I am actually able to stay asleep (mostly).

I also see if the cpap slips and I come out of sleep. I get a sleep efficiency number that is useful for me. What I mean is, I have another tool to help me monitor my sleep and my life.

I suspect some people might just uncover a sleep problem while using this to lose weight. Since there is often a connection between sleep disturbance and weight gain, I think this belongs.

Best of luck, I think you will love this!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal on these Devices   December 3, 2008

I just bought five of these and I'll be glad tell you why. I've been a Fitness Trainer for the last 13 years. I have had some celebrity clients but that's not why I call myself a trainer to the stars - it's because I believe all my clients are stars and are looking to uncover the inner star they are.

In my profession I have had the opportunity to sell to my clients hundreds of bodybugg's -- that popular device featured on NBC's The Biggest Loser. This device is made by the same company and is the same device. One of my clients biggest complaints about bodybugg is that they hate logging their food everyday. I try to make them but they tend to fall off after a while. GoWear fit has introduced what they call a "Nutrition Assessment" and all you have to do is log your food for THREE DAYS - that's it! The GoWear fit software does the rest and gives you the most accurate information coming off your body.

Why is this device different? It's because it actually collects data coming off your body. It is worn on your upper arm and collects data like caloric burn, steps, activity and sleep efficiency. Devices like pedometers (Omron, Actitrainer, etc.) do a good job of counting steps but only ESTIMATE caloric burn. They don't touch your body and therefore are not accurate and I do not reccomend them to any of my clients. (Would you let a doctor ESTIMATE your blood pressure or would you want him to put the cuff on your arm?) And these other devices don't measure activity levels or your sleep. GoWear fit does it all.

If you want to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume - it's that simple. This device gives you both pieces of information in an easy and accurate solution that you hot sync to when you want. My clients lose an average of 8 pounds in the first 21 days wearing this device. You can too.

Get this today and change your life forever!
